Harvard vs Cambridge, UK [CS]

Hey Fabio,
First of Congrats!!! I need to tell you right away, whichever you'd end up choosing, you'd be any disadvantage since both schools are insanely great

Since you said a couple of very specific points regarding your decision, it's really hard to pick one over another since both have great charms for you (although it seemed to me you're leaning toward Cambridge a bit )).

I haven't visited Cambridge, but I have been to Harvard before. My friend studies in MIT and he told me that he could take a couple of classes in Harvard since there is a cross-registration between these schools. That being said, don't feel like you'd be in disadvantage in terms of taking "hard" CS classes in Harvard.

I'd say that in terms of academic rigorousness, both would more or less provide the equally awesome opportunities. In terms of career-wise, you said you're gonna work in EU after graduation. I don't know how decided you're on this, but I'd say that you don't have to rush into things.

All in all, my subjective advice would be go for Harvard!

Fabio - you have laid out some good points here, few comments from us

- have you visited both schools? they are very very different and while it appears you prefer Europe over US, Harvard (Boston) is a really unique place and very different from the rest of the US; like you said student body is also very different - in Cambridge you will find plenty of bright students academically while Harvard will have a mix of people with various backgrounds (athletes, entrepreneurs, celebrities etc)
- Harvard degree will open just as many doors as Cambridge in Europe but you will have a higher chance doing something in the US after graduation
- US undergrad education is a great experience but not for everyone so based on "why Cambridge" points we would recommend going to Cambridge if financially it is not a big deal for you/your family (and if you are interested you can always do masters in the US)

As someone who spent a year at Cambridge for my MPhil degree I can say the environment in Cambridge is definitely more nerdy compared to the US schools I visited. While there are plenty of events in Cambridge the atmosphere is more academic. I enjoyed my time there but I suspect I could've met more people and had more opportunities in the US. Like you, I prefer Europe over US but UK vs rest of Europe is another question. I have been to Boston few times and would choose it over Cambridge as a city to live in - it is very European and there are lots of things to do...food is great, people are very open and it's very international.
