Deciding On a College Major

Deciding on what career path to choose might be the toughest choice that student needs to make during high school. Deciding your college major is extremely stressful and may take more than just 4 years to decide. Many students go into college undecided and want to experience many different college-level courses before deciding on what subjects they like. Many even go into college with a decided major in mind but decide to switch halfway because they find that major to be too difficult or feel as if that major doesn’t really suit their likes.

Going to college undecided or switching your major halfway through is not recommended as you’re losing both time and money. The high school experience can be a bit of a bumpy ride and a huge learning experience for everyone but discovering what you like will set you on the right path to attaining your dream career.

How do you discover a subject that you like? The simplest answer is to base it off your personal interests and classes that you enjoy in high school. If you find a certain subject that you are really good at and understand better than all your other subjects during your first few years of high school, then it is more likely that you will enjoy taking courses related to that subject in your later years of high school or even college. For example, if you discover during your freshman year that you are really interested in chemistry and are really good at it, then it is a good idea to become closer to the teachers in that department or take an advanced level chemistry course that goes farther in depth in order to really get a better understanding of chemistry. Things like this play a really big role when it comes time to make decisions about majoring a subject in college.

Doing a lot of extracurricular activities inside school or outside of school can also factor into your decision of majoring in a certain field. Joining many different clubs in schools or doing research programs outside of school such as a business club or theater club or even research programs at labs can help you not only meet people who have interests similar to yours, but also help you find things that you really enjoy. For example, attending a theater club in your school might shift your interest into that performing arts field and you will steadily start to grow a passion for theater and acting.

The biggest advantage of having a decided major is that it not only saves you both time and money but it also helps you narrow down your list of colleges you want to go to. During high school if you find yourself extremely interested in studying chemistry or pharmacology, you will usually gravitate towards schools that have chemistry or pharmacology programs. Deciding what college you want to go to is one of the toughest decisions that a high school student has to make and if you are able to find something about a college that appeals to you, then you are one step closer to attaining the career of your dreams.
