US College Applications

About group

We have created this group after seeing a number of questions from both US and foreign students about US college application process. Our goal is to help college bound students navigate relatively complex college admission process by directing them to the right resources and having related discussions here on RoundPier. RoundPier community is about sharing ideas and learning from one another - we hope that those who have successfully navigated this process can share their insight and help others. Members of our team have attended leading universities in the US and Europe and would be happy to share their experience.

Depends on early decision vs regular and colleges have different deadlines

Next year starting August. Like Derek said, depends on early or regular and each college has different deadlines. Some deadlines are in November, some December, etc. good luck.

My advice is to start as early as possible and make sure your essay is ready before you even start application process
I’m an international student applying for bachelors in few universities in USA. For now i have plans to apply to NYU, Bowdoin, UMD, Carnegie Mellon. If i apply to these schools without request for financial aid, will i able to apply for aid later on during my time at the campus?

You can but for the first year you def won't get any finaid as I understand. It will also be hard to justify applying for finaid later but possible. Also bear in mind that these schools provide very little finaid for international students anyway. Your best bet is to see if you can qualify for some kind of scholarship after the first year.
Hey guys! Where are you international students applying to???

All Harvard students have this in common. I’m not talking about money, connections, or perfect test scores. It’s something most don’t think about at first.

So I have worked at a convenience store near my house for about 4 months now and my question is :Should I put this on my application form . I have this question because one friend of mine told me that these activities were not impressive and colleges didn't really care much about them . So what do you guys think about having a part-time job ?
Link
Your job isn't to impress admission officer. You need to create a profile of all your activities and commitments to make sure they understand what you are spending your time on. Working in a grocery store is a part of your profile.

Agree with John. If this is something that takes up a lot of your time you have to include it. In fact, many admission officers like to see regular jobs on students resumes. What's really impressive if you have a job like this, do well in school and also participate in a bunch of interesting projects.

Part time jobs are big part of ECs and many AOs do care about it...
A question that you might get asked on your college interview that’s sure to stump a lot of students is, where do you see yourself in the future? It’s a hard question because nobody really knows where you’ll be in the future. Yet, you are expected to give an answer to it, so here is how to answer it well.

Yes, I am working on my essay
A question that you are guaranteed to get asked on your college interview is why our school? Out of all the possible schools that you could possibly apply to out there, why is our school the best fit for you. Most students freeze when they’re asked this. So this will show you how to answer it well.

Any international students here can share their experiences?

I have been somewhat successful with acceptances at a few smaller schools (some top LACs) but the cost is really something that makes me thing I should stay in Europe. Overall, you can do well if you start applications early and have a story to tell...just my personal experience.
At the end of every college interview, the interviewer will ask, "Do you have any questions for me?" It seems like a simple question, but most students incorrectly answer this question, costing them in the college admissions process.

Of course there is no "perfect" way to answer all of the possible college interview questions that can be thrown at you. But, there is a general strategy that can be used to stand out in your interviews.

The college interview can be one of the most stressful aspects about applying. A big cause of this is that you don’t know what to expect. So to get you focused only on answering questions, here is how to prepare for your college interviews.

The gpa part you dont have to worry about, they will convert it to a ay they can understand. Try taking more sat or acts, your school must be higher.

I'm from an under developed/remote area Won't it give any benefit?
It will be taken into consideration but once again BU isn't ideal for the international students given limited amount of financial aid they offer and while they will not compare you to the applicant from the US your SAT score will be an issue to them. You should re-work you college list to focus on universities where you have a better chance of admission and the ones that offer significant financial aid to international students.
